3 steps of a habit - cue, routine, reward. I'm trying to experiment with killing the last one - reward. In the beginning this is useful, but over time, the mind becomes conditioned to only follow those habits which promise some kind of immediate reward. However, the most important habits I would like to build such as meditation, often have no immediate reward waiting at the end. I can always treat myself to strawberries everyday that I complete an hour of meditation, but that reward changes how the mind thinks and is counterproductive. What has your experience been with the 'reward' part of the 3 steps?
